Matronae

The cult of the Matronae is attested in several Gaulish regions, including Cisalpine Gaul. Joseph Clyde Murley's research features sixty inscriptions dedicated to this group of deities. The Matronae are considered goddesses of the land, territory and tribe.

Sometimes they are also considered deified female ancestors. In any case, it is accepted the belief that each tribe/region has its own "group" of Matronae, instead of considering them as a single Entity. They are Goddesses linked to the prosperity, abundance and protection of those who are under their sovereignty. They are also related to Fate.

Within Cisalpine Gaul, in some inscriptions they are honored together with the Nymphs, which reinforces the belief of the Matronae as Deities of the Earth and of nature. Another class of spirits that is usually presented in the company of the Matronae, are the Junones, guardian spirits that protect women, the female version of the Genius. In some inscriptions they are honored with Diana, another Goddess known for her relationship with women. So it may be appropriate to consider that the Matronae are also protective female deities.

Regardless of the different interpretations of who the Matronae really are, their relationship with the Tribe/society, with the Earth and their spirits is undeniable. Within my personal practice, they are the first entities to be honored at the beginning of the rituals, as a way of honoring the land where I live and where the ritual is performed.
