Minoan Brotherhood Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Minoan Brotherhood?
The Minoan Brotherhood is an initiatory mystery tradition of witchcraft for gay and bisexual men, often described as a form of gay pagan spirituality rooted in British Traditional Witchcraft. Founded in the 1970s by Edmund “Eddie” Buczynski, the tradition combines the structure of Gardnerian Wicca, modern magical practice, and symbolism inspired by the mythology and sacred imagery of Bronze Age Crete and the ancient Mediterranean world. The tradition celebrates life, nature, magic, and the sacred power of male love through ritual, devotion, and spiritual brotherhood.
Eddie Buczynski (1947-1989) - The Founder of the Minoan Brotherhood

What makes the Minoan Brotherhood unique?
What makes the Minoan Brotherhood unique among modern pagan traditions is that it places the mysteries of male love and male Eros at the centre of its spiritual vision.
The tradition honours both:
• The Great Mother Goddess
• Her Divine Son, the Star-born God of our Homosexual Mysteries
Together they represent the sacred balance of nature, desire, transformation, and spiritual awakening. Within this tradition, love between men is understood as a sacred expression of divine energy rather than something separate from spirituality.
Who can join the Minoan Brotherhood?
The Minoan Brotherhood is a spiritual path for gay and bisexual men, though any adult man who feels sincerely called to the tradition may explore it.
Our Grove requires students to:
• be at least 21 years old
• have a genuine interest in gay pagan spirituality or witchcraft
• be willing to engage in personal spiritual development
• approach the tradition with respect and sincerity
Because the tradition works with the mysteries of male love and the spiritual anatomy of the masculine, men who love men often feel the strongest connection to this path.
Is the Minoan Brotherhood only for men?
The Minoan Brotherhood is a male initiatory mystery tradition. It explores the spiritual and magical dimensions of male love, and masculine spirituality within a sacred brotherhood.
We strive to be inclusive and welcoming, and our path is open to anyone who identifies as a man and feels genuinely called to the tradition. What matters most is sincerity, respect, and a willingness to engage with the spiritual current of the work.
As with any initiatory path, joining begins with conversation and mutual exploration. After an initial introduction, we take time to see whether there is a good personal fit and shared resonance. If there is a genuine connection, the journey can continue together through study, practice, and mentorship.
There is a related tradition called the Minoan Sisterhood, which explores similar mysteries within a women’s spiritual framework.
How is the tradition organised?
The Minoan Brotherhood is structured as an initiatory witchcraft tradition with three degrees of initiation. Local groups are called Groves, comparable to covens in Wicca.
Each Grove is led by a Minos, a Third Degree High Priest responsible for training students and initiating new members into the tradition. Groves operate independently but share the same initiatory lineage and spiritual current.
For those interested in the initiatory lineage: Temenos Eromenos is part of the Kommos Line, which is a branch of the Eleutheria Line. The Eleutheria Line represents a synthesis of the California/Kydonia Line and the Knossos/Phaistos Line, both of which trace their origins back to the founder of the Minoan Brotherhood, Edmund “Eddie” Buczynski.
Through Eddie’s initiations into Gardnerian Wicca, our initiatory lineage ultimately traces back to Gerald Gardner, the founder of modern Wicca. Gardner himself was initiated in 1939 and later brought the tradition to public attention in 1954 with the publication of his book Witchcraft Today.
What happens in rituals?
Rituals within the Minoan Brotherhood focus on:
• connection with the Gods and the sacred forces of nature
• magical practice and spiritual development
• the strengthening of brotherhood and sacred community
Most Groves celebrate:
• 13 Full Moon rituals
• 8 seasonal Festivals of the Wheel of the Year
These rituals honour the cycles of nature, the mysteries of the Gods, and the unfolding of the initiatory path.
In keeping with the traditions of British Traditional Witchcraft, rituals and meditative practices are traditionally performed skyclad. This means that participants work without ritual clothing, symbolising openness, equality, and a return to the natural state of the body.
Working skyclad also reflects an important principle within the tradition: that body, spirit, and nature are not separate, but expressions of the same sacred reality. The human body is therefore not seen as something to hide, but as a natural vessel of life, power, and devotion.
As with all aspects of the tradition, respect, consent, and personal boundaries are always central. The Grove strives to maintain a safe, respectful, and supportive environment in which participants can engage in ritual practice with dignity and mutual trust.
Are the rituals sexual in nature?
The Minoan Brotherhood is a spiritual and magical initiatory tradition in which Eros and sexuality are understood as sacred forces. Within the tradition, the mysteries of love, desire, and the body are explored in a spiritual and devotional context, as part of a path of healing, transformation, and celebration.
Ritual and magical practice may therefore engage with the sacred dimension of erotic energy, while remaining rooted in reverence for the Gods, spiritual growth, and the wellbeing of the community.
At all times, the tradition places great importance on respect, personal integrity, and clear personal boundaries. Consent is fundamental, and every participant is responsible for honouring both their own limits and those of others.
The Minoan Brotherhood strives to create a safe, respectful, and supportive space in which men who love men can explore spirituality, magic, brotherhood, and the sacred mysteries of Eros without judgment or shame.
Why are the teachings secret?
The Minoan Brotherhood is an initiatory mystery tradition, which means certain teachings and rituals are reserved for those who undergo initiation. This is not about secrecy for its own sake, but about protecting the depth and transformative power of the initiatory experience. Some aspects of the tradition can only truly be understood through direct participation and experience. All teachings and practices of the tradition are considered oathbound, helping to protect the integrity of the tradition and safeguarding its mysteries from dilution or superficiality.
How to Join the Minoan Brotherhood (in Europe)?
If you are interested in the Minoan Brotherhood, the first step is usually to contact a local Grove or teacher (Minos). Training normally begins with a period of study, mentorship, and spiritual practice before initiation becomes possible.
Students explore areas such as:
• mythology and symbolism of the tradition
• meditation and magical techniques
• ritual practice
• the Wheel of the Year and lunar celebrations
Initiation occurs only when both teacher and student feel the time is right. Initiation is never promised; it is earned.
How can I become a member of the Minoan Brotherhood in the Netherlands?
If you are interested in becoming part of the Minoan Brotherhood in the Netherlands, the first step is to get in contact with the Grove Temenos Eromenos, located in Utrecht.
Membership in the tradition is not immediate. The path begins with a period of introduction, study, and personal mentorship, during which we explore together whether the tradition resonates with you and whether there is a good mutual connection.
During this time, training may include:
• personal mentorship and study
• meditation and magical practice
• participation in ritual gatherings and seasonal celebrations
• gradual preparation for possible initiation into the tradition
Training can take place in person, and in some cases through long-distance guidance, although regular personal meetings remain an important part of the path (depending on distance).
Throughout this process, students are personally guided by Minos Alexias, High Priest of the Grove Temenos Eromenos, who provides mentorship, instruction, and support along the initiatory journey.
Is the Minoan Brotherhood the right path for me?
The Minoan Brotherhood is not a quick course or a spiritual hobby. It is a path of devotion, transformation, and magical practice, where students gradually deepen their relationship with the Gods, with nature, and with the sacred power of Eros. For those who feel called to it, it can become a profound spiritual journey of healing, magic, and celebration.
